How de facto relationships affect you

June 15th, 2011 -

If you have been in a relationship and living together with your partner for more than three years there’s a good chance that you are part of a de facto relationship.

This means that you will be treated the same as a married couple in the eyes of the law.

This could affect many facets of your life, such as your eligibility for government assistance or even your residency status. Another aspect that needs to be considered is the fact that your partner may be entitled to claim a portion of your property should the relationship end in separation.
