Getting a fair wage – what is minimum wage?

June 15th, 2011 -

Working New Zealanders are entitled to a minimum wage by law.

There are three levels of minimum wage that depend on the type of work and experience of the worker:

  • The adult minimum wage applies to employees 16 or over who are not new entrants or trainees
  • The new entrants minimum wage applies to employees of 16 or 17 who have completed less than 200 hours work or have been working for less than three months
  • The training minimum wage applies to trainees 16 or over who are doing recognised industry training of at least 60 credits per year

The adult minimum wage is currently $13 an hour, while the new entrants and trainee minimum wage is set at $10.40 an hour.
